BLM DC Response to Indictments of Terence Sutton, Andrew Zabavsky

Today, after months of fighting for justice in the police murder of Karon Hylton-Brown, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C. announced the indictment of Terence Sutton for second-degree murder, one of the DC Police officers involved with this gross negligence of their duties and complete disregard for this young man’s life. He was also indicted with federal charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice, along with his supervisor Andrew Zabavsky.

MPD officers killed a Black man while he slept in his own car. We demand justice.

Early on the morning of August 25, 2021, the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) executed 27- year old An'Twan Gilmore, a Black man, as he slept in his car. This was the second person MPD shot in 9 hours. Statements given by Chief Contee have been contradictory and unclear and somehow "the officer’s body camera was activated but that part of the shooting is obstructed by the protective shield the officer was holding". We are clear what this means, and that is completely unacceptable. We must take immediate action.

A federal judge on Friday morning will consider arguments in four lawsuits brought against former President Donald Trump, former Attorney General William Barr, and officers of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the Arlington County Police Department, the U.S. Park Police, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Secret Service, and the D.C. National Guard for violating the constitutional rights of protestors on June 1, 2020.

ANC Commissioner and Black Lives Matter DC core organizer Anthony Lorenzo Green said those numbers are concerning, and he believes it’s a direct correlation to the pandemic.

“We were already struggling before this pandemic with a lot of the issues that were affecting our community. All this does is put an extremely close spotlight on the disparities in our community…”

Release of BWC Footage

Earlier today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Kevin Donahue announced the release of body-worn camera footage of the police murders of Jeffrey Price, Marqueese Alston, and D’Quan Young. Jeffrey Price (Ward 7) was chased to his death by MPD on May 4, 2018. Marqueese Alston’s (Ward 8) killing came just a month after MPD murdered D’Quan Young (Ward 5) who was shot and killed by MPD one less than a week later May 9, 2018.
